What is Almsgiving?
Almsgiving is giving of your time, talent or treasure to those in need. Catholics are especially called to practice almsgiving during Lent, in addition to prayer and penance. In many Christian cultures, almsgiving is considered a fundamental aspect of ethical living and a means of fostering solidarity, reducing suffering, and bringing souls closer to Christ. This practice allows us to see each suffering person as the suffering Christ. Through almsgiving, we console the Sacred Heart of Jesus and join in his redemptive work helping the suffering grow closer to Christ. “I thirst for souls,” Jesus told St. Teresa of Calcutta. Many saints such as St. Faustina and St. John Paul II, share in Christ’s suffering for souls who do not know him and those who are “lukewarm.” Jesus told Saint Faustina that lukewarm souls wound his heart most painfully. (Diary 1128). How can you give of your time, talent, and/or treasure? Take this question to prayer, preferably in front of the Eucharist. Do not forget that prayer is a work. Prayer takes focus, time, and attention. The work of prayer is not to be underestimated, the power of prayer is unfathomable! Consider focusing on prayer as a form of almsgiving. MyCatholicDoctor offers many almsgiving opportunities for you to help the sick and suffering through gifts of your time, talent, and treasure: – Joining our prayer team.
